Bills Targeting Transgender Athletes
In the 2021 legislative session, a group of South Carolina lawmakers are pushing legislation that unfairly and cruelly targets transgender girls for exclusion from school athletics. House Bill 3477 and Senate Bill 531, referred to as the so-called “Save Women’s Sports Act.” On April 7, House Bill 4153, which is nearly identical to these bills, was introduced in a last-ditch effort to force discrimination onto South Carolina’s trans youth. Every student should be able to access the opportunities and lessons of school athletics. To categorically deny transgender students the freedom to play alongside their peers is completely at odds with lawmakers’ duties to care for and protect our youth.

Bill Criminalizing Physicians and Prohibiting Medical Care for Transgender Youth
Lawmakers in South Carolina are also consisdering House Bill 4047, a bill that would prohibit transgender people under the age of 18 from receiving essential medical care and create a school climate where they are unable to be themselves. The bill would make it a felony for medical professionals to provide transition-related care to transgender minors. Conviction could result in up to a 20-year prison sentence for the medical provider.
The bill also requires teachers and staff at schools in South Carolina to share with students’ parents if they learn that a student’s “perception of [their] gender or sex is inconsistent with the minor's sex.” In effect, the bill essentially requires teachers to “out” transgender students to their parents, potentially before they are ready to share.
