Sign Up to Testify Against Extreme Abortion Restrictions in South Carolina
We wanted to be sure you were aware of two dangerous bills that will be heard this week by the South Carolina Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee – both are extreme efforts to restrict access to reproductive healthcare, and we need your help in stopping them.
You can read about both bills here from our partners at WREN – but the long and short of it is this: S.988 would ban all abortion access in the state if Roe v. Wade is overturned or modified and also establishes "personhood" rights for a fertilized egg. This would make IVF – the process by which many people, including same-sex couples and LGBTQ people – virtually impossible. S.907 is an abortion miseducation bill that would require doctors to tell abortion patients who receive a medication abortion that they can reverse the medication, which is not true.
We need your help in stopping these bills. Please sign up to testify against the bills before the Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee at 9:00am on Wednesday. The deadline to sign up to testify is 5:00pm ET today, Monday, January 24. Unfortunately, there is no virtual option for testifying. Everyone who wishes to speak against these two bills must appear in person and will be allowed 3 minutes each.
We know this is a challenging time in the face of COVID-19 and understand if you cannot appear to testify. But if you do feel comfortable and can come, it is the most impactful way for us to delay or block these bills. To register to testify in person, please click here and sign up to testify.
WREN is also hosting a testifier training via Zoom today, Monday, January 24th at 6 PM to help prepare you to testify. You will be able to ask any questions you have and get a better understanding of these bills and some messaging guidance. Click here to register for this testifier training.
