Speak Out for the Freedom to Marry in South Carolina – Share Your Story
This fall the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in South Carolina has taken center stage again – and we need more South Carolinians to speak out and share their stories about why marriage matters to them.
There have been two important recent developments when it comes to the freedom to marry:
Last night, Governor Henry McMaster voiced his opposition to marriage between same-sex couples, saying: “Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I think marriage ought to be between a man and a woman, just like I think boys ought to play in boys’ sports and girls ought to play girls’ sports.” His comments underline that the very same anti-LGBTQ rhetoric motivating anti-transgender legislation runs all the way to opposition to the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. This is an egregious display of what far-right South Carolinians are ready to do to roll back basic dignity for LGBTQ people in SC.
Meanwhile, a bill that would codify important marriage protections at the federal level – the Respect for Marriage Act – is currently under consideration in the United States Congress. The House passed the bill with overwhelming bipartisan support, including “yes” votes from Republican Congressmembers in South Carolina. Now it heads to the Senate, which is expected to take up the bill after the election.
Now, with both of these developments at play, we want to hear from you and share your story! Take a minute to share your story about why the freedom to marry matters to you, and we may share it out from the SC United for Justice & Equality social media channels. Add your information below!
